Electrical Problem

Hi, I am new to this and all blogs. I am at a loss with my boat (79 Bahama Tri hull). It has a AQ 120B Penta motor with a 270 outdrive. This is my first boat and I purchased it about 2 months ago. The boat fired right up when I bought it, but he was using a spare battery, as the boat did not come with one. I bought a brand new battery and started the interior restoration immediately. I kept the battery disconnected, because I didn't want to drain it. After I put the new stereo in, I wanted my wife to hear it, so I attached the cables. I turned the key to the on position, but nothing.... Started smelling an electrical smell, and long story short, I am pretty sure I crossed the wires at the battery. I had nothing after putting the cables on properly.

I have since put on a new starter/solenoid, reset button, new fuses, new ignition switch. The battery cables were also brand new. Today I had the battery load tested at Auto Zone and it is fine. I can run the stereo, tilt the out drive, use the blower and bilge. There is no life in the engine though. I cant get anything to turn over. Due to the age of the boat, no one here seems to want to work on it. If anyone could give me a clue what to check or try next, I would greatly appreciate it. I have project cars, but this was not supposed to be a project....

Re: Electrical Problem

Have you checked the neutral safety switch? Most boats have a switch that prevents them from being started in gear. Sometimes the switch goes bad or is wired wrong, or if the controller is not in neutral, then nothing happens when you turn the key. the switch is usually built into the controller or connected to it. If you can't find it take it to someone who works on Volvo Pentas and ask them to show you where the neutral safety switch is. Or if you can get a manual for the boat, it should be in the manual.

Hi there, Do the gauges power up at key up? Have you check for power at the ignition key and + side of the coil?

I know you said you installed new fuses, just want to point out there should be a main fuse by the engine starter area in case you may have missed it. See #14,
