Electrical Problems Starting HOT! HOT! HOT!

I have a 1995 Mercury 75 3 cylinder outboard. It has been running fine all spring but I have seem to run into a little bit of trouble. I went to start it yesterday and put the key in and the motor wouldn' turn over. It went woomp.....woomp................woomp. So I figured the battery was dead so I put in on a charge and went back at trying to crank. Same thing happend. I took the cowl off and went to take the battery out and the battery terminals were wicked hot. The negative and positive cables were also hot hot. I touched the starter and same deal HOT!! The starter turns barely at the top by the flywheel but won't turn. If I wrap the flywheel with a pull cord and turn the ignition to on it will spin over and run eventually after a few tries. Any help with the starting problems would be more than appreciated. Thank you much.

First a disclaimer, this is a guess on my part, but I would suspect that you have a bad starter. Some sort of direct ground in it drawing a lot of juice when you key up the starter. Lots of current causes heat from the resistance to large flow of current. Since the starter is the end of the line for the current and it (the starter is also hot) there must be a big draw of current thru it. You could take it off and have a starter/generator shop check it out. Electricity is tricky and sometimes intermittent, so good luck. iboats has a lot of starters listed. JH
