I have a 1975 85hp merc. It runs great when running but drains the battery when its not running. How should I go about diagnosing this problem. The elec. choke works form the throttle but the key won't even click when turned.

I'm stumbed and eager to go skiing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Electrical problems

Your battery is bad. Any autoparts store should do a check for free. Does it hold a charge? Check for corrosion at terminals. Maybe a poor connection? Check your wiring. Do you have any accessories still running when you shut of your engine?
