whenever I try to raise my trim while on the water my boat starts missing and then running like crap. eventually killing the engine . The engine will turn back over but not start. My tachometer also reads much higher then it should (2500 to 30000)at idle but i know its not. It got so bad yesterday my engine was rocking back and forth and you could feel the whole boat shaking. Any ideals-Thank you

Re: electrical problems

We have no idea what boat, what engine, (outboard, I/O, Inboard) so we are lacking any useful information. If you have an I/O or an Inboard, you might start by looking at the condition of the battery and charging system. A weak battery will cause the engine to miss or die when voltage drops too low as it would when you operate the trim. Does your boat have a voltmeter? If so, what does it read without operating the trim and then when you do.

Re: electrical problems

Usually (ECU controlled systems excepted) when one system affects another its an earthing issue. You need to clean all earthing wires on your engine and trim tilt system.

Low voltage is what's causing the engine to miss and die. The trim system draws lots of power so everything I mentioned applies. You probably have a voltmeter on the console. What does it read at 2000 RPM? If there is no voltmeter you can buy a hand held unit for about ten bucks at any home improvement store or Radio Shack. Set it to the 20 volt scale, connect it to the battery and start the engine. If the charging system is working the voltage should rise to 13.2 - 14.4 or so at 1500 - 2000 rpm. If it doesn't the charging system is not working.
