Ok I just got a 2002 Minn Kota 50pd motor from my father in law. I am having issues with it. I have tested all components and it looks like the control board is having issues. I can hot wire the motor to run and if i jumper the two negative wires the pedal will control on and off on the motor but i have no speed control.does this seem normal?

Question 1: I am not sure if it is safe to jumper the two wires together (temporarily till I get a new control board)?

Question 2: I also was trying to determine if the pot on the foot pedal is working correctly. I see some small fluctuations with a ohm meter when I test the pot but i don't see a drastic change in the resistance.

Any information woud be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats!

1. I don't think it would be a problem as long as you have the proper sized circuit breaker to protect the wiring in case the motor draws too much current in this mode.

2. If the pot was disconnected when you got those readings, it sounds like it's bad.

Re: Electrical Questions

I normally see a drastic difference when I vary a pot. Was it isolated from all other components when you checked it?
