Electrical Terminal Post Disintegrating . . .

Unusual thing is happening to 1 of the electrical terminal posts on my boat

Boat = Formula F-242SS, Mercruiser 7.4L, Bravo1, Mercathode system, SS propeller

Dual Battery set up with Group 24 batteries. The batteries are wired to a Perko 4 position battery switch (OFF, #1, Both, #2) normally left OFF.

Each battery has leads that go to a dual terminal post on the transom. (2 posts per unit) so, there is a '+' and a '-' lead on each terminal post unit. From there, they lead to the Perko Battery switch. This is all original Formula set-up.

The '+' terminal post on the PORT side only, has disintegrated twice over the past few years. It takes about 2 years for the terminal post to disintegrate. The terminal post is a 3/8" stainless steel bolt, and it turns black and produces a lot of rust, then eventually breaks off from the mounting block. The other 3 posts are fine.

I am figuring it is some sort of corrosion going on that is being induced or aided by the electrical system, or something. Beyond that I am not sure what is going on.

Anyone seen this sort of thing happen before, or would know the cause?

Thanks in advance.

Hard to imagine that the stainless steel is corroding before the copper connection on the batery cable. You don't say but I am assuming your boat is in the water all the time? If so, is the Mercathode system always on?

Yes - in the water seasonally May - Oct., Mercathode is always on and I believe it is connected to the terminal post in question.

Ayuh,... Put a new post in, 'n slather it in grease...

If oxygen can't get to it, it can't oxidize...
