electrical wires

I just purchased a 1995 88spl evinrude outboard. It came with the control box, wire harness, and tach. I plugged the harness from the control box to the connection under the shroud. It looks like the 3 wire harness on the tach goes to the back of the control box, is this correct? There is another 3 wire connection by the shift handle about a foot long. There is a 5 wire harness on the rear of the motor coming out of a black box that I don't know where it goes. The tilt and trim botton on the motor works, but the one on the trottle handle does not. Do I somehow have to connect the 5 wire harness on the back of the motor to the 3 wire harness on the control box, and if so what are the other 2 wires for? I hope I explained this to make sense and hope someone can help me. Also where the harness connections are made under the shroud, there is a single tan wire with no visable place to connect it to. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: electrical wires

I'll try ta help you out.
Yes the three wire cable from the tach plugs into the back of the control.
My guess is the five wires from the control are the t&t. The two extra wires may go to the trim gauge, but I'm not sure. In the five wire cable, the red wire is hot, the blue wire is "up", and the green wire is "down". The wires to the trim gauge should be brown/black and brown/white. The tan wire usually goes to the warning horn but that wire is probably in the harness so I don't know.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Re: electrical wires

hello again: I have gotten all wires hooked up except one 5 pin harness. The red wire in this harness is hot, the others I have no clue as to what they do or where they go. The motor starts and idles without this harness plugged into anything. On the back of the motor towards the top there is a black box with several harness's. This is where the mysterious 5 pin harness comes from, and just hangs down. Does anybody have a 1995 88spl evinrude motor that can tell me what these wires are for? Thanks again

pbr,

Does your tilt/trim now work at the handle?

I'm with Hooty, that five wire harness sounds like tilt/trim.

Re: electrical wires

howdy hooty: congratulations sir, the harness is for the tilt and trim. my hat is off to you. my boat does not have a tilt and trim gage, so I will take your word that the last 2 wires in the harness are for a gage. I was a little concerned about hooking up wires without knowing for sure what they are, did't want to short something out and end up with bigger problem than I started with. I did't even realize that the motor had a tilt sensor on it. are there only 2 connections on a tilt and trim gage, or do I need a hot and ground wire also? as long as the sensor is there , I might as well add the gage. again I would like to tip my hat to you for your help. thanks again
