Electrolytic derusting ?

I was curious if any one here has used this method for derusting the exhaust manifolds and elbows. I'm slowly working on my 75 Mark Twain v sonic ( Merc 888) restoration and found a quite abit of thick rust in the thermostat housing after upgrading the carb and intake. I have a feeling the Exhaust (and probably the water pump) wiil look the same but I havent removed the manifolds yet. I'm thinking even if I get the rust build up out of them there will bo no way to protect them. Is this something I should do or even attempt? Currently they look good from the out side and have no leaks but has not been tested on the water yet.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Re: Electrolytic derusting ?

im not a salt guy....so i can only give second hand info on this......

i saw a post here a while back.....bond-o (i think it was) was saying that the rust is now part of the manifold wall....remove the rust....and the wall is thinner....the salt marine manifolds are supposed to be replaced every 4 years with raw water cooloing.

Re: Electrolytic derusting ?

Thanks Ooops, I was thinking that removing the rust could actually weaken the manifold depending on how bad the rust is but I wasn't sure what the normal procedure would be. I have read thu some post and replaceing them sounds like the best solution. I just thought I would try to get the engine in shape w/o dropping a wad of cash in it untill after I've got the hull done and ready for the water.

Re: Electrolytic derusting ?

if your not rusted to the point of over heating...i would take pics or measure the amount...post it on the engine forum and don or bond-o can tell you the tollerances for replacement.

you might be ok

cheers
