I'm about to go ahead and order a Pertronix Ignitor and Flamethrower kit to install in my 1990 3.0 Mercruiser to replace the points system, I'm tired of having to change them and tired of the long sluggish starts so I figured Id give it a try after all Ive read about them.

I just wanted to clarify about the coil whether I should go with the 1.5ohm or the 3ohm. Im under the impression (and could be wrong) that both will work but with the 3ohm I will have to bypass the resistor and wire it to the choke to receive the full 12volts needed. Or I can go with the 1.5ohm and just wire it up as is with no alterations. Do I have my facts right or am I off?

The models I think I need are:
Ignitor 1146a for 4cyl Delco
FlameThrower 40111 1.5ohm epoxy filled

Do these model numbers seem right to those of you that have done this modification before? I just wanted to make sure I had my information correct before placing any orders. Thanks, Jake.

Nope, You want the 91146A Ignitor II, and either the 45011 (oil) or 45111 (epoxy) Flamethrower II coil. A little more expensive but a much better system. With the flamethrower II you eliminate the resistance wire and run full 12V to both the coil and Ignitor II module. For example the ignitor module can burn out if you accidentally leave the ignition on, the Ignitor II will not. Also the Ignitor II will adjust your dwell for engine RPM. Just IMHO. You can read this http://www.pertronix.com/catalogs/pd...ition_conv.pdf That is what I run.

The Ignitor needs the full 12v so might as well go with a coil that takes the same. I put in the exact setup that stonyloam suggested on my old boat. I really liked it. The Ignitor I will blow out if you leave the key on. The II has protection for it.

Alright thanks a lot guys, after reading into the Ignitor 2 I went ahead and placed an order for the Ignitor 2 91146a and the Flamethrower3 45111 epoxy filled coil. So I need to just tape off the purple resistor wire and splice and solder into the choke wire and run that to the + on the coil to give it the full 12V?

When I did mine I actually ran a new complete line from the starter to provide 12v. The choke wire should work though. Just check voltage. Some people say they don't get a full 12v there.

I ran mine from the choke wire. Made a solder connection and gave it a couple of coats of Liquid Tape to waterproof. Just removed the resistance wire from the coil, taped the end and coiled it up out of the way. Make sure the new wire is stranded (not solid) copper at least #14, then hook it along with the red Petronix wire to the coil + and you should be good to go. Your voltage should be good, the coil gets voltage from the starter when it's cranking anyway and that is the most critical time. Good Luck.
