I have a 1978 four cylinder mercruiser/GM 120 with the standard points and condenser ignition. Everyone I have talked to has recommended switching over to an electronic ignition. Is this advisable and if so, what brand/model would fit my motor and what all is necessary to make the conversion?

Pertronix is a very popular conversion in boats. Visit their site and see if a kit is available for your motor.

Pertronix is a point/condensor replacement unit. It is an electronic switch instead of a electro-mechanical switch. It allows for a much stronger spark to get to the plugs without a set of points to burn up. Especially with the proper coil it does give you a better spark without any of the adjustment hassles of points. It is definitely a great place to start and maybe as far as you really need to go.

It is not, however, a full electronic ignition system such as one of the various capacitive discharge or digital systems that can be used in conjunction with the Pertronix. Just be sure you get the Pertronix II version. It has 'key left on' protection and variable dwell. Without the (II) version, you leave key on, unit burns out!

iboats ought to put some marine distributor versions in stock. They'd problably sell a lot of them.

I just ordered a pertronix 2, the rep at carshop said to use the epoxy coil. would this be correct or should it be the oil filled one?
javsam

Either one is fine. Epoxy is just more $$ out of your pocket, no real perfomance advantage. I bought the oil filled.
