Hi all.. quick question
I gotton my sticky mits on a Old Elgin 2.5hp... I was told its a 2.5. The only numbers on it anywhere are ... 401 24254. Thats all there is. I am trying to find out the correct oil gas ratio.... Oz gas per gallon would be ideal.
Also .. should I use weed wacker oil rather than the newer syntetic tw3 oils?
I was kind told it was 3/4 pint oil per gallon.
Thanks for your help........
Tony....

If it is truly an Elgin the 2.5 was only made in 46.My info says "some pre 52 models use 3/4 pt per gallon". Use TCW3 rated oil.If you want to run a little cleaner use synthetic. As I understand it it burns cleaner, smokes less and is biodegradable.Early Elgin numbers all begin with 571-58--- yours being 571-58401 Perhaps the 401 is all that is left of the number.571 indicates built by West Bend.Who was purchased by Chrysler around 65 and became Force around 84.

Thanks you for your help Steel..
I looked around it again and on the front very faint I saw the numbers 571-58401 so that makes it an 1946 then.
I tried it with 3/4 pint to the gallon pre mix as you suggested and it runs really well..
Its now attached to my boat !! [;o)

Great, enjoy. At 3/4 pt per gallon it may foul plugs some. Just pull and clean regularly.
