Elgin 2hp, nail shear pin, lower end grease...

Well after getting the 1958? Elgin running good, I am starting to look at other things.... I had installed some marine gear lube in the lower unit and after three hours it was very milky and makes me wonder if I should be using grease. I have some omc "tripleguard" grease which seems perfect, it's very soft. On the opposite side of the fill holes on the lower end unit is a small weep hole of some type which makes me wonder if grease should be used.
On shear pins, what should I use? I thought some heavy copper wire, maybe brass rod, but I really don't know, appreciate some ideas.

After market service manual says sae90 outboard gear lube.
I supose you could use grease.
Motors prior to 59 have a 5/32 X 1 5/16 brass shear pin.manufacturers pt number 16043.models after 58 have a 5/32 X 1 1/4" stainless pin pt number 16138. 2 hp uses a 6 1/2" X 4" prop.3.5 uses 7 1/2 X 4 1/2.

Fill the LU with lubriplate 105 white engine assembly grease, or if you're in farm country ask the tractor dealer for some corn head grease...same thing, different use. You can cut new pins from rod available at the big box stores.

Shear pins just need to be a soft enough material to 'shear' or break if you hit an object so that you don't ruin the prop, and hard enough so as not to shear under normal operating condidions. Heavy copper wire will work, but might be a bit to soft, so take a number of spares. I wouldn't use a piece of common nail as that is probably to hard.

Oh yes, you may already have a couple of spares. On that engine there is a 'clip' on the tiller handle right where the tiller bolts to the engine. Check to see if there are some still some spares there. I know there were at least 2 types of 'clips' used. Whit one type the pins snap in sideways, on the other type the pins push lengthwise into rubber bushings in holes drilled into the side of the tiller handle.

Wow, I think you are right-I am not looking at the engine, but I know there was a slender pin thing in a grommet right where you are talking about- I fooled with it a bit trying to figure out what it was for since it did not seem to have anything to do with the tiller handle. It had been painted along with everything else so it looked like part of the assembly. thanks, I have cut some out of brass rod of smaller diameter that the hole so it will shear easily. thanks for the comments.
