I just bought an Elgin outboard at a estate sale.........I have no info on it......Where do I look for model and serial numbers? This is a small 2 cyl. and looks to be about a 3- 5 hp mid 50's or 60's. I am interested in restoring it for a "fun" project. If you need a pic of it let me know. thanks :cool:

Welcome to iboats Doc, I'm not sure about elgins but most outboards will have a tag on the motor bracket that clamps on to the boat. Post the model and ser. #'s and the info will come.

Sadly, There is no tag on mounting bracket. I looked before I bought it and was hoping that I was looking in the wrong place. After talking to an old codger locally he was under the impression the outboard might be older than I think it is. Is there any sites on the web that might have some general info on older outboards? Also I will start to disassemble the motor this wekend and hopefully come up with some numbers off the powerhead. If I find out anymore info I will post again. Thanks :D :D

Thanks OMC for all yer help so far. I just got done dissassembling some of the motor and came up with some stamped and raised lettering and numbers on the powerhead. There is a stamped number on the lower rear part of the powerhead. The numbers are stamped 611-4918 It also has on the side of the upper cylinder the word ALCOA boxed in with a capital G next to it. On the lower cylinder is 22010 in raised lettering. On the cylinder cap is the number 22518 with ALCOA (boxed) and the letters G2 next to them all in raised lettering. Am I getting closer to a model/serial no.? My guess is the stamped no's are the closest I am going to get as I have found no tag anywhere. Thanks :cool:

I went to that site you had posted and those guys are way too good :D I had 2 replies within 2 hours.......Only one problem ....... apparently they had some server problems and lost all thier posts. I didn't write down the info so I had to repost and hopefully will not be lynched for not writing down the info they gave me. I was told the motor could possibly be a 1947 5 1/2 hp sold by Sears. So I was wondering if you had any links to find a repair/parts manual for it? I never knew their was such a huge interest in older outboards. I think I found a new home :cool: Thanks for all the great info :D :D
