I read thru the post about the truck with the EGR problem; you guys seem to be the foremost expert on Chevy trucks so here's a curve ball. I have an old truck thats been sitting for months due to a problem. The problem started about 6 months ago. The engine would cut off everytiime i slow down to a stop from a 35mph and above or when i slowly make a sharp turn into a parking space.
Could it be that the fuel filter is clogged and doesn't reacts fast enough at low RPM? Is it a known problem for that engine model or is it an isolated one due to my driving habit? I do have a few after market performance intems installed since day one.
I'm trying to stay away from the dealer. The last time i took my car to a dealer, I got reamed. $ 750 for a fuel filter change.

Thanks for any inputs and hopefully someone out there can use this infos as well.

2003 chevy Silverado
4800 Vortex
52,000 miles

Think you have to do some basic checks, fuel pressure test, charging to eliminate fuel or electrical problems or find them. You say performance parts such as headers??KN air filter some problems can evolve from such applications, like MAF sensor [Mass Air Flow]test bylightly tapping with piece of wood a couple of times[hammer handle], truck idle will stumble and then pick -up to normal if working right
Have you pulled the codes???
What performance parts installed??
Did you disconnect your ISC [idle speed control] pressure switch on power steering inlet hose??? When turning vehicle at slow, about idle speeds wheels cranked your idle speed will increase if working properly
The only other thoughts
I have without more info is a restricted exhaust system [cats plugged]
Or loose or broken mounts[engine] not grounded
Loose wiring or burnt by starter or junction block

Don't know that much about modern (post 1970) vehicles but I had the same problem on a car. Turns out it was the idle air motor, whatever that is.

Re: Elmondo, Dollupper....

good information provided here already, but i will add. the egr valve you have is different from the other fella, yours is linear / or electric..... the type that is famous for carbon deposit problems on the 4.3 W engine in the s-10 blazer. wouldn't be opposed to removing that valve and checking the underside for carbon/also the intake manifold port.
fuel filter would be a good choice also if you haven't replaced in last 20000 miles.
the ignition system, well you have a crankshaft position sensor and a camshaft position sensor, which both have been issues for gm trucks, without a lab-scope to actually observe the performance of these items, replacement as a guess can get costly. only problem i have experienced is the crankshaft sensor, located behind the starter assy, and yes, starter removal is required to get at it.
idle air control is also a good suggestion, start by looking at back side of the throttle plates for a black/gummy substance. if it's there, then you'll have to clean that first as the air gap has been decreased by the build up of the substance, and you can also expect to find that substance on the idle air control solenoid as well. i suggest to my people to purchase several containers of fuel injector cleaner at the parts store, bottle suggests one per tank, i say 2 per tank of 15 gallons because you have a problem, will help clean up the substance after you clean out what you can get to.
i'm leaning towards the egr valve and the idle air control system....

Re: Elmondo, Dollupper....

the air gap i refer to is that of the throttle plate. think of it as a spark plug gap. if the debris on the back side builds up, the air gap becomes smaller, acts like the choke is on.
i just spray an aerosol can of carb choke cleaner on it, usually does the trick.
when you take your foot off the gas, the computer sees you do that, and then controls the idle, but if that preset air gap is not correct, your computer doesn't know it, and cannot correct for the blockage quick enough to prevent stalling. same thing can happen with a stuck egr valve from the carbon deposit stuck in the valve.......
hope your not totally confused.......

Hmmmm, this is too technical. I was hoping you can point out the problem and how much the repair cost so i know i won't get reamed by the dealer..I'll drop it off at the dealer tomorrow. I wouldn't be suprise if they say i need a new motor.

boatbouy you might be on to something. i will just have to wait for the tech. report....

Once again a brain is never full, but mine is getting there. Thanks !!!!!!

If you could go for one of those free code checks we could tell you more about a cost and a possible fix, right now it's just a shot at possible causes and there is lots, the code reading will led anyone in the right direction, then the troubleshooting starts. It should be the first thing the dealer does too we hope for your sake
