I have a 1989 Formula 292SR1 w/ twin merc 454 mags. Immaculate cond but recently Starboard engine began cutting out randomly usually at crusing speed (38 mph - 3.000 rpm). Just as if the key was turned off. Read a lot of threads posted here and got some great ideas. So far I've replaced the coil, (no change) then the sensor in the distributor, (then it only cut out at idle, still very random) then I swapped the ICM with the port engine, (the problem did not move to port). Anybody have Ideas???

Re: Elusive Thunderbolt IV Problem?

I had the same exact problem with my '89 5.0L Merc. When it cuts out, look at the shift interrupter switch...is it in the right place? Mine would come out of the v notch and cut power off to the coil.

I had some work done on my transom and and when put back together, it wasn't adjusted correctly. I had to make an adjustment to the shift cable (lower cable). After that, no problem.

Could be that your lower shift cable is beginning to fail.

Good luck.
