Saturday morning we got to the boat ramp at 1030am (rocky point on the Chesapeake). Had started the boat the day before on muffs but it took 3 key turns, so I cleaned battery connections and charged batteries. After that it started 4 times in a row. Good to go right? So back down ramp, launch, park truck. Go to start boat, click click click then barely turn over. Hmmmm maybe battery? Go take battery out of my truck, attach it, try to start again and click click click. Nothing. Thankfully it's a 2 lane launch and no one was there sO I wasn't in the way. Brole out the tester, both solenoids are good, but starter doesn't spin. At this point it's either give up and go home or fix it and get on the water. Took starter off motor in 5 mins, 2 brushes were stuck and starter had lots of gunk from when it got submersed last year haha. Cleaned it out released the brushes and reinstalled it, all in under an hour. Fired up right away, spent all day on the water. My question is what new starter p/n do I need? Seems like most are listed for a 98-up. Is 97 and 98 different.

Re: Emergency repairs at the boat ramp

I myself prefer to have starters rebuilt at a local shop that specialises in marine and industrial srarters. The one I use stands behind his work, has a fast turn arround time, and does rebuilds for most of the marinas in my area. Also a bit more economical than buring new.
