Hello,

I have a 1984 OMC Stringer. I just replaced the ball gear, water pump housing and impeller. Also the prop shaft seal. Everything is back together now and I put the muffs on it and I have a leak on the end cap port side. I'm probably missing the seal and look at it tomorrow.

My question is , why does the water flow through the end caps? I looked at the water flow diagram and can not understand why.

The water comes out of the trunion ears and then goes in the side caps and then into the holes in the intermediate housing which are sealed by the round cork gaskets, there are also “O” rings that seal against the stainless plates with gaskets between the aluminum covers and the plates. There are also bleed holes in the area that let excess water out which is what you may be seeing.

Hello,

My question is , why does the water flow through the end caps?

Because it is how OMC designed it in the early 60's

Considering the tilt and ball gear set up, it is the only means of getting water from the raw ater pump to the motor.

You may have lost an oring or gasket

While you had the drive apart, did you inspect the splines on the 2-piece vertical driveshaft?

Thanks for you help guys. I took the pivot cap off today and saw that the cork washer was missing. It must have fell on the ground last fall when I brought the outdrive inside. I’m going to order a new kit for the pivot caps. It comes with the cork gasket the o ring and the gasket that goes between the plate and the pivot cap.

yes I looked at the splines and all is well.
