ENGINE ALARMING

I just purchased a 1987 90hp Johnson VRO from a friend. The boat has been sitting around without any use for the last year. I changed the gas and oil and the engine fired up just fine but I was getting an engine alarm. I talked to the service department at the local dealer and he gave me some tips, I didn't have enough oil in the tank and it was a low level alarm. I was also told to make sure that all of the hose connections looked good and that I had no bad hoses. I inspected all the hoses and clamps and every thing looked good. After starting the engine up I had a constant alarm but when I wiggled the ignition switch the alarm stopped. Is this a VRO problem or a bad ignition switch.

Iwould say the switch is bad. But also check to make sure you have a good ground connection It might be a little corroded if hasn't used lately

When you added the oil to the VRO tank...did you knowtice that the float moved back up to the top?<br /><br />Also...the ign switch resets the alarm each time you turn it off and on.<br /><br />When you turn on the ign switch to the ON position..you should get a chirp from the control box...this will let you know that the alarm system is functioning. If not..you may some parts to replace.<br /><br />TMD

Reply to the Marine Doctor,<br /> Prior to adding the oil to the VRO tank the alarm beeped about once ever two minutes and no longer alarmed after I added more oil to the VRO tank. The alarm now sounds as soon as I turn the ignition switch but will go out when I back off of the swith, the engine still remains running with the alarm off.
