Engine Alignment Question

I have read the adults only section on engine alignment. I am trying to understand what is happening when you put the alingment bar just into the coupler and bump the bar end to "set the gimbal bearing to align with the coupler". I know when installing the gimbal bearing, you have to "set it" so it is flat on the face of the bearing stop. How are you moving this bearing with the alignment bar?

thanks

Re: Engine Alignment Question

The inner portion of the bearing moves independently from the outer ring. That's what makes it "Gimbal" .
It's very stiff movement, and bumping the alignment bar with a mallet 'shocks' it into position

ok, i understand what you just said, it makes sense. will the tip (1/2") of alingment bar enter the coupler even if the alingment is off
to start this gimbal bearing setting procedure ?

Re: Engine Alignment Question

This picture is of the bearing and its carrier. You can see the outer surface of the bearing is rounded, allowing it to move in all planes inside the carrier...

Re: Engine Alignment Question

The idea is to try to get the alignment tool to start to go into the coupler. So, your initial whacks on the tool to move the gimbal should get the tool to start into the coupler, like you said.

The better the alignment, the further the tool will go in. As the engine mounts are adjusted properly, the tool will slide in with ease.

you would be looking for grease marks made by the coupler splines to be even around the tool.

Re: Engine Alignment Question

Yes, when you get the alignment bar started, the alignment process can begin, You will need to keep "bumping" the AB to keep thing going smoothly as you adjust.
You have seen this thread haven't you? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2971085 and the video's at the end.
