engine alignment tool idea ?!

just curious, can I use a old drive shaft I have left over from a outdrive rebuild to align my engine. any thoughts are appreciated , thank you.

I guess you could, As long as it's from the same type of outdrive. It would be a nice quicky tool while using a real alignment bar. But I think the alignment bars are made to set a tolerance for the alignment of the splined drive shaft.

my thinking was if the spare shaft slid in smoothly so should the new one .. I just didn't know if the alignment bar served a greater purpose :confused:

Well the alignment bar really set tolernces for the shaft, gimble bearing and coupler. But if the outdrive comes off easy and goes on easy then your made tool really would be a quick check thing. It would not hurt. But I would still get an alignment bar.

An old shaft will work fair to verify that the engine is aligned, But not worth a dime if you have to align either the engine or the gimbal bearing.
