Have 89 2.3 vip. I toke it to get transom cable fixed, cause I tried doing it and didn't work. So paid a shop to fix my mess up and turn out they messed it up as well cable adjustment was all off. So toke it back to them to give em a chance to fix there mistake. Mind you I toke my outdrive off the first time by myself no problem, but getting it back on was a bear toke 3 of us. The pain was getting the u joint coupler into the u joint bellow. Fast forward week when the shop has it the first time guy called and said I need a new u joint bellow as the old was swollen due to grease and oil, cause he couldn't get the u joint coupler into the u joint bellow. So got the new bellow. Guy said slid right in no problem at all. Now fast forward another week I tooke it back to them to fix there mess up. I stayed there while they worked on it and one guy toke the outdrive right off no problem. Did the readjusting of transom cable and went to put outdrive back on. Well three of them couldn't get the drive on what so ever. The u joint coupler would slide right in but couldn't get it to go. Soo the had this younger kid start turning both motor mounts and couldnt get it aligned, Wanna guess what they did next? Grabbed a cherry picker hooked it up to the back of the engine lifted it a bit and few mins later drive slide right on! This is not right at all. I know this know after reading up on it. They said my transom has some rot and that caused it to not go in "this time" so now I'm thinking to myself I need to take this to someone else and have them look it over and align it right! what does someone else think?

Re: engine alingment help

1. dont run the engine.
2. dont go there again
3. take it to someone have the engine properly aligned, may also need to have the transom housing bolts tightend. ( at least worth checking due to rot if there is any. )

Re: engine alingment help

Oh and one more thing they filled outdrive from bottom hole, said been doing that since cobras came out and no problems. But when toke it back second time and outdrive was on a stand ge checked it and asked if I drained it cause was low. He put two pumps i. he said after that. When they test it they hook it to a dynomentor, dyno. Which is only used to produce pressure as was in water. It don't tell rpm and was ran on dyno first and second time there. Before I left. The **** interruptor lever was not centering on the v , and seen guy tell the one guy to turn something , which think put less pressure on it do went. Got charged 70 an hour for this

If they filled it from the bottom hole & you run it I can guarantee that your drive will be toast in less than 2 minutes. Cobras are filled from the MIDDLE hole. Your mechanic is clueless as far as Cobra's are concerned. OMC went belly up years ago & mechanics who know how to service them are few & far between. Get a manuel & start reading.

Re: engine alingment help

Seen ebay has few cheap alignment bars on there. It sounds like a pretty straight forward process to do. One thing was wondering with my 2.3 ford motor it was 2 side mounts which are adjustable to I have to adjust both them equally? Thanks
