Hello I am new to boating. I now own a PROJECT TREMLETT 21 SPORTSMAN and this boat needs the engine replacing. A second hand one came with it. The engine concerned is a Rover V8 conecting to an alpha 1 outdrive. I have taken out the old engine and all the bits that go with it to tranfer to the other engine. There does no appear to be any gearbox or any sort of clutch. Is this the norm? There is a plate bolted to the flywheel. Bolted on this plate is a large rubber unit in to which the splines of the outdrive slide into and thats it.Is there a gearbox and clutch on the outdrive unit? The control lever seems to select forward and reverse and netural ok but without any sort of clutch surly the gears will not mesh smoothly. As I do not have any workshop manuals or the like as this is a totally custom set up.Any one with any ideas. I will try and take some photos to post. Thanks

Re: Engine and out drive system

Ray, Boats do not have clutches. The water acts sorta like a clutch, since it gives. You can liken it to the torque converter in an auto's automatic transmission.

On the Alpha 1 outdrive there is usually an ignition cut-out switch which kills the ignition for a split second when shifting between gears. It really helps the driver when he tries to "pull-out" of the current gear, by unloading the gear. The switch is located on top of the block, starboard side, where the shift cable from the controls connects to the shift cable of the outdrive.
