I have a 1988 GMC, 4 cylinder, 3.0L, 203, serial # 2770087. Is it difficult to replace the block. I have never done it before and I am not sure if I want to attempt it. How much is a new block? What would be the labor charge? Help.
You have one of the simpler ones to work on. Anyone with some basic mechanical skills could do that one.

The toughest part will be hoisting the old one out and new one in.

Don't attempt it without a manual. It will be the est $30.00 you ever spent.

You can get some price ideas here.

http://www.dougrussell.com/Products/index.cfm?fuseaction=&Category=6
mr neumer, i just changed my eng and it is not difficult, dj is righton ,about in and out of the boat. type in (engine hoist)in the search feature there is more info in there, good luck, mickey1
I am half way done with the same job (first time for me). I have the old engine out! I bought an engine hoist for $200 this weekend. Check around auto parts places (places that sell auto performance parts are likely to sell hoists). After checking around, most places seemed to want around $600 to do the labor...and that was if I bought the longblock through them for $2700. After some searching, I can pick up a new longblock for around $1700, so I figure I can have this thing done myself for around $2000...instead of $3500 from a local boat repair shop. The manual is a must. Made the removal go smooth as silk. Full details in a step by step manner.
Are you rebuilding the engine or replacing the engine? Sounded to me like you were rebuilding the engine. I swapped out my 4 cylinder for a 6 myself and about to put it in the water I hope. Most of it was a piece of cake. biggest deal is making sure the engine lines up good with the gimble bearing and the outdrive.
with any engine removal the engine alignment must be checked and a special tool is required without the tool you'll probabaly be replacing a few engine couplers
