Engine bogging down between 1800 and 2800 RPMs

I have a 93 Crownline 182, 5.0L I/O. After playing around and pulling my teenage on the tube I noticed the engine started bogging down and would even stall when I moved the throttle past idle to get on plane. If I went WOT, it would bog down and then run ok. The only position that has a problem is where I normally have the throttle to maintain 25 MPH for towing the tube. I've been experimenting more and it seems to be an RPM issue vs. throttle position. It bogs between 1800 and 2800 RPM under load but runs fine at other settings although it starts to bog in neutral around 3000 RPM. I appreciate the help in advance ... any ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to the site as I see this is your first post. Hopefully the great people here can get you on the right track.

A couple things will help out.

1. What is your OMC model number? It should be one of these:
2. I looked up a couple of these and see that the first three have Prestolite BID distributors in them. Is that correct for your boat?
If yes, review my prior post from (LINK in blue) 1992 5.0L Ford RPM shudder and Trim RPM drop Started by Offrddrver, July 12th, 2015, 09:21 PM as it may help.

3. Do you have the SELOC OMC Maintenance manual? If so the testing for the Prestolite BID distributor sounds like a good start for you.

4. Once you reach WOT or any cruising speed and you TRIM up or TRIM down, does the motor feel like it is bogging down or high RPM missing? If so, and you have the Prestolite setup, then your issue sounds very much like the one I just resolved. (again, see my post from above)

If you don't have a Prestolite BID distributor, then I will kindly defer to others here at Iboats that have great ideas.

In short, my Prestolite BID distributor shorted Positive to Ground internal to the sensor and that was causing holeshot issues, lightly without pulling, really bad when pulling anyone (even on a tube), was short of power up through the RPMs, and then once it reached WOT it only lost power when I trimmed up or down.

Probably a long shot that it is the same type of issue, but maybe worth a shot to check out.

Best of luck.

No Title

See the two types of distributors for the 1993 5.0L OMC cobra.
Which one do you have (mostly identified by the caps) Prestolite BID is the more dome shaped one. The flat cap style is not they type on my boat.
Hope this gets things started for you.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately it is a model 502BPRJUB ... it has the flat cap style of distributor. I don't have the manual and I'm trying to determine if this is something I can troubleshoot myself or if I need to take in for repairs. I'm hoping it is a sensor issue and an easy fix although I recognize these issues can be complex. In answer to your other question, I would say it is high RPM missing at cruising speed.

Alright, thanks for the feedback.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with that cap and rotor. Maybe if I get some time I can look up the test procedure for that unit if it is in the SELOC manual.

On my boat the W.O.T. ran fine until I pressed the TRIM up or down button. If I made the trim motor run that made the engine miss/shudder (sound wrong), **this was my High RPM miss**. As soon as I let off the trim button it would run fine at W.O.T. again. Basically that is what told me I had an electrical problem and not a fuel problem.
Sorry to repeat myself, but my holeshot was always bad, just much worse with skiers, wake boards, tubes.
End result, in my case, a new distributor sensor and coil.

Check/clean/tighten all ground wires. Sounds simple, but if you read enough of these posts you will see more than one boat had bad grounding causing problems.

Last bit of advice. Go purchase the SELOC OMC maintenance manual (unless you can get official shop manuals), it has stepped me through every repair so far. Knock on wood I haven't had it in the shop yet.....Only DIY for me.

Best of luck, I'm sure someone else will have more pointers for you.

Hi Ewers,

I'm having nearly the exact same issue and currently me and Offd are trying to figure out.

Like your issue, mine seems unrelated to trim function. You can see what has been tried so far in my top speed and bogging thread.

I haven't ruled out a fuel starvation issue but I also haven't had time to perform the distributor trouble shooting procedure

So in short , welcome to the issue I'm looking forward to further inputs!
