last month i purchased an alumacraft navigator 175 cs. with a 40 gallon fuel tank and with a 90hp merc elpto. what a great fishing boat. the marina told me to break in the engine for one hour varrying the speed and rpm. i did this, he also told me to run the 40 gallons with the extra oil thru befor running regular gas thru it. i am down to the last 8-10 gallons of this mixture. is it now safe to add regular gas to my tank without harming the merc. i am planning a fishing trip that will require more than what is left in the tank.<br />thanks, teamstromer--fishin for essox-lucious

Re: engine break in period

TeamStromer, I would think you should complete the break in as specified by the manufacturer. It is acceptable to "run" extra oil beyond the breakin period. Therefore, mix in the extra oil and go on your fishing trip.

Re: engine break in period

Sure, go ahead and fill her up. I just finished the breakin on my new 225 Suzuki EFI. Following the instructions on it would have you burning a premix of 50:1 in addition to what the automatic oiling system provides for the first 5 hours. They had strict limitations on the max RPM during each of those first hours too. I almost doubled up on the times they recommended and finally had 8.5 hours on it before I ever let it go to WOT. But even with that 8+ hours on it I haven't gone through a full tank of fuel. So I just filled her up after the breakin hours were done and now the level of added oil will go down with every tank full. A couple more fillups and there won't be any trace of it left. Think of it as sort of like weaning the engine from extra oil.
