After hour many hours should the oil be changed on a completely rebuilt engine (165 Mercruiser IL6)?

FreeBee,

You could think of it in automotive terms. One hour is pretty much universally equivelant to 40 miles.

Many auto makers say replace the oil after the first 2-3000 miles.

I know you put a lot of work into this. I would feel most comfortable changing it after 20 hours-the first time and 50 thereafter.

Re: Engine Break-in

Thanks djohns, I only have about 5 hours on it so far. At this rate, I might get the whole season out of it before I have to change it! I can't get out on it as much as I would like to.

1 hour equals only 40 miles? I can't see how that would work. I have 300 hours on my 94, and it's got WAY more than the equivalent of 12,000 miles on the ticker. I'd say more like 120,000.

Chris,

Well, as I said. That is the automotive equivalency standard. It is used throughout the industry for vehicles that use PTO's and idle for extended periods.

Granted, auto. engines in boats work harder, that's why I offered a (somewhat agreed upon) marine "standard".

But, what do I know.

I don't know about Anybodies "Standards"......
My experince tells me that a 1000hrs motor has traveled about 100,000 automotive miles....

For Oil Changes, I live by the 20hrs(30W oil), then Every 50hrs......NAPA Gold filters,+ Mobil1 15W50....
