I was just a little curious of what others with a early 1980's 50hp merc had for fuel consumption. My engine uses about 5 gal/hr @ or near WOT. I was recently talking to another fisherman with the same engine on similar boat. He claimed he used 2g/hour @WOT. Is he getting fantastic mileage, or should I look into some carb tuning/repair?

Re: Engine Burn Rate

I've read somewhere that a good rule of thumb was 10% of your rated hp @ WOT for 2 strokes

So for you, 5 gph would fit the formula.

2 gph @ WOT sounds very low to me.

k

Re: Engine Burn Rate

5 or 6 gals per hr is about right. I think the guy who claims 2 gals per hr is either lying or can't tell time too well.

NO 50hp engine uses 2 gallons an hour...ESPECIALLY an old 2 cycle...

5 gals hr at wfo is norm. 2 gals hr at wfo is a miracle.

Re: Engine Burn Rate

my 1150 gets 12 GPH, so the theory holds true, unlike that old salt that told you he gets 2 GPH, unless he has a twenty horse under that hood
