I have a 3 point hydro I built and need a motor for it.. I'm not going to race it in sanctioned races so no need to stay within class rules..the biggest concern is that the motor needs to be around 70lbs. so it will need to be a two stroke. and used as I'm on a budget....just wanted to get you guys opinions on what you think would work out for me..Thanks..

Re: engine choice

It's called a "scat cat" . It's' 8'6" long and I guess weighs about 100 LBs. plans for it came from an old pop mech mag. They suggested using a race motor called a hurricane, puts out 18 HP. but that was 40 years ago, I was thinking along the line of a 15 hp 2 stroke fishing motor and would like to find the lightest one available. These days, it seems the trend is toward 4 stroke, and that would be to heavy. I'm not totally against a racing motor, but I know nothing about them..don't have any idea whats available.....

here is a site that sells the plans.. http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=HydroPlanes/ScatCat

Re: engine choice

I've always liked the merc engines, do they make a 15 hp motor?

Re: engine choice

i had one years ago that had a 1955 15 hp evinrude, was fast as heck. but i had to start it in neutral, jump in and hit it. i was probably the problem as i was chunk back then. but it would take on water. the 70's and never 15's are lighter the the good old ones.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: engine choice

The little E/J 15 hp from 74 up is about 65 lbs and can turn 7,000 rpm
not a typical hotrod motor but with the right prop might push pretty good.

Re: engine choice

That sounds just about perfect for my needs Steelespike, 65 lbs is well with in limits, and 15 hp should be plenty to scare the pants off me..for a while anyway...you said they started making them in 74 an up so it shouldn't be too hard to find a used one, although I think I would prefer something a little newer. do they still make them?
