Does the engine circulating pump affects water intake when engine is ran w/ muffs? I have redone the impeller many times but still not getting water pick up. I have a Mercruiser 888 w/ Pre Alpha drive.

What else could stop the water intake? Flushed all the passages and its cleared but don't know why impeller is not picking up water. Had a neighbor helped with the matting of the upper and lower so the it's lined up.

If it worked before you did the work, then you missed something. Review what you did . Did you get the copper water tube to go inside the plastic guide tube? Did you remember the impeller keyway?

Where does the water stop flowing? Does it make it up to the engine at all? Did the hose connecting the bell housing to the Gimbal housing get damaged or work its way loose?

you have the muffs on and the hose on full, correct?

if so the water pressure should push the water to the impeller...... and then the impeller should push thru.

however remember, your power steering cooler is the first strainer in the system. did you back-flush that?

Water flows out to the exhaust when I flush from upper's copper pipe. When the lower was off, I put muffs on and water does come up to the impeller housing.

If you have flow from the copper tube then your problem is below the tube connection usually.. With the lower dropped is there resistance when trying to turn the driveshaft?
Did you place the guide tube in the pump housing before putting the lower back on?
How much oil did you drain from the unit before splitting it?
With the drive installed and shifted into full forward, stand on a prop blade and try to turn it CCW.
Does it move?

With the lower dropped there is resistance when trying to turn the driveshaft. Lifted the pump housing cover 1/4 in off the base and spunned the driveshaft. The impeller turns when spinning the driveshaft. During matting, I placed the copper tube in the upper and the plastic guide on the lower. Drained all oil from the unit before splitting it. Prop does not move CCW per it was set to locked for removal whenput in Forward gear. Thanks.

No, I meant to put the drive together ,install it, shift into F, and try to turn the prop CCW with your body weight.
Sometimes an upper gearset gets melted form low oil and the engine does not turn the lower driveshaft or the coupler is bad

You might need to bleed the circ pump. Rarely have to buy can happen.

Huh? Never had to bleed a circulating pump in my 50 years of working on any motor.

I had to do it twice in 4 weeks. One on a 350 mpi with bravo 3 and then on a VP 571 with 290 DP. The latter had its cooling in bits previously. Had to take the pipe work that was plumbed in to the circ pump for the hot water tank off it whilst running. Away it went.
