Hey guys i have a question, my engine coupler broke and i am getting ready to buy a new one. Well they sell the coupler with and with out the drive shaft piece. Its cheaper to get just the coupler, but i haven't taken the motor out to see if the drive shaft piece looks like.

Would anyone know if the driveshaft piece goes bad as well as the coupler, or does the coupler give out first?

One more thing i have an 305 5.0 230hp the sn# 0C45981, is this coupler the right one part# 18643A5

It is a 21' Maxum bowrider 1989

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Engine coupler

The chance of the shaft going bad are slim. You need to remove the drive and inspect. Then pull the motor and compare the coupler if you don't trust the parts guy.
If your coupler went bad then your motor was probably mis-aligned. Before you put the drive back on,get an alignment shaft and make sure it's correct. If you don't your new part might go.
If you are gonna do your own work get the OEM shop manual. It will save a lot of trouble.

Ayuh,....... I have to Disagree.....

These are Matched machined surfaces, that wear Together.....

If 1 is Totally Shot,..... The other absolutely will be Worn to some degree......

Pull the drive,+ have a Look.......
The tops of the splines should be Flat,+ Not Pointed.....
