I bought a 1986 renken bowrider with a Merc 120 in it about 1 1/2 years ago. Just finished fixing up the interior and started on the engine . Started it right up and it idled fine, but when I accelerate to 2000 rpm it would cut out and die . Replaced the fuel/water filter and drained the tank of all of the old gas . Filled it up and it's doing the same. Just looking for some suggestions . I know the carb needs cleaning out but was curious if there could be another cause. Thanks for the help .

Lotsa crap in an old dirty carburetor. Most likely cause. SHould have a sort of filter separator on the fuel pump and a inlet screen on the carb. My bet is a layer of mud in the bottom of the bowl and coating the check balls on the accelerator pump.
