I have a 1998 Mercury 150 engine. It is not EFI and has oil injection. When I give it gas, it will stall and die. It idles ok, seems to get upto 1100-1200RPM fine, but any more gas will kill it. It starts easily and sounds good, and will also rev up to normal RPM (well past 4000RPM) if I give it gas while it is not in gear. I disconnected the gas tank to replace the bilge, but double-checked the hose connections and suction and didn't find any leak. Please let me know what you guys think... thanks

Re: engine cuts out when gas is given

Get a manual.Read it & then check float levels in carbs, clean or replace any fuel filters,Do a link & synch, then adjust idle mixture screws with the engine idling in gear in the water.NOT ON MUFFS.with the engine running on muffs there is no back pressure. If you adjust the mixture screws on muffs the engine will stall when you give it gas in the water ..sound familiar???The most common cause for the problem you are having is a lean idle mixture as you open the throttle it lets in more air & leans the mixture out further & without enough fuel to burn the engine stalls.Hope this helps :)

Thank you for the tip... I will get ahold of a manual and check out the mixture and sync. I'll let you know how it goes (probably won't be for a couple days though)
