Engine died while underway

I have a 1981 Evinrude 35 with electric start. Just this week I put on a new Fuel/Water separator bought from Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/FUEL-WATER-SEPARATOR-KIT/11071204). Both arrows on the separator point toward the engine. The ball is between the separator and engine.

I went fishing on Saturday. Everything seemed to be fine (well, except for a weak battery initially wouldn't push the starter gear to engage..), and made several small hops between holes. Once, however, while I was underway at full speed for a while, the engine simply died immediately. My buddy went back and pumped the ball, and said it seemed weird. I pumped it, and it seemed sort of like the fuel was being pushed backwards into the separator but was still firm. After releasing/reconnecting the connection on both ends (tank and engine), I started it right back up and continued on my way. The gas tank vent was open. The gas line is rather new (bought last year) but I did cut it to install the separator.

It's a small boat, and I tend to take small hops between fishing holes. It seems almost that we went far enough to use the gas between the ball and engine, but then just ran out because it wasn't pulling more gas. I'm wondering if I somehow connected the separator incorrectly, or need to check something.

It has not happened again, but I just want to know if there's something I might check. Ideas are appreciated.

You probably had a loose clamp connection allowing air to break the fuel line suction.
