I have an 1982 Sea Ray with a 260hp GM 350 and a mercruiser (R) outdrive. This boat is new to me and is also my first. I replaced the impeller and its housing and all went well, now it dies as soon as I put it in gear. It starts fine and idles fine but as soon as I put it in gear, forward or reverse, it dies. Is this associated with R/R of the impeller or something different. Thanks.

Did you refill the entire gearcase and upper gearcase with oil?

TMD

Check your interrupt switch on your shift plate. Sound like it needs to be adjusted.

The interrupt switch kills the engine momentarily when you move in and out of gear. It is a switch with a lever arm that sits on a plate at the back of your engine. The arm rides in a series of teeth - while your looking at it have someone move your gear lever back and forth and you will see how it works. Sometimes the switch goes out of adjustment - in which case you will stall as soon as you put the engine in gear.

Thanks Ralph, I appreciate your info, I did check the oil and my buddy said he filled it while I was cleaning up and it's full so now I'll check the switch. Not much about it in the Clymer book I got but I think I can maybe figure it out if not I'll let you know. Thanks again.
