I have a '77 Marlin w/ Ford 302 V8 & OMC 175 O/D. When I throttle up past 1000 RPM's, engine dies. Was running great for the 30 minutes prior to this starting (it manifested itself in the middle of the river). Engine will re-start fine and can be rev'ed up to 3K + RPM's in neutral. When I put it in gear, I can only idle along. Recently replaced fuel pump and gave complete tune-up (points, plugs, condenser, etc).

Re: Engine Dies when throttle applied???

sounds like a fuel issue. there is a huge difference in fuel demand between 3000 rpm unloaded and loaded. that 302 would have come with a fuel filter mounted on the front of the left exhaust manifold and it should have a screen at the bottom of the pick-up tube in the gas tank. check them both. not sure about a 77 but there may be an anti-syphon check ball and spring in the fittings at the top of the tank. these can become gummed up and block or partially block fuel flow.
