Engine falters at approx 3000 rpm

I just purchased a 1970 Chrysler Charger W/130hp 2 side draft Strombergs and the 250 outdrive (One owner and only 1000 hrs running time) Yesterday I took it out for the 1st time. I let it warm up until the temp gauge started to rise and then headed out. The boat could not of run any better, but at about 3000 rpm it started to cut out. If you increased the throttle it would take right off again and would cruise great up to about 5000 rpm (As high as I wanted to take it). Any one have an idea what might be causing this?....Thanks

possibly a fuel issue. A clogged jet in the carb can cause the engine to cut out.

Welcome!

Sounds like a cool boat, get some pics up when you can.

What do the spark plugs look like? They usually have a story to tell.

Check fuel filters. Check dwell and timing as well.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone. It sounds like a good "Going Over" is the next indicated step. It's the smart thing to do when taking ownership of a vintage boat....Thanks again!

yes spark plugs and new fuel filters would be a good start. The spark plugs will tell you if the engine is running lean or rich. They should be a nice light brown color if everything is working the way it should.

Thanks,
Boat is heading to the mechanic Mon. for a full "Check-up". Will post the finding and some pics.

There is a beautiful 16' Schuster (Tahiti) with a newly rebuilt Mercury I/O. $3000 (a bit spendy, but a gorgeous boat) on the Redding Craigslist.com.
I want it , but my old lady says one water toy is quite enough.
