We have just bought a 2000 Sea Ray 180 in pristine condition. There is no engine hours counter on the dash---would there be one on the engine somewhere?

Thanx

Nope. your only input is the honesty of the seller. Good luck.

:welcome: Kenokids. If it is a fuel injected engine then some of the ECM's (electronic control module) can be plugged into a dealer's computer and tell you the total number of hours on that engine. I'm not sure what year this feature was added to the ECM's but it's worth a check with the dealer.

I would go ahead and install one somewhere so you can keep track of when things need to be done.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... No, hour meters are generally owner added accessories,...

Only the computer controlled motors have that info available,...

A Compression/ leak-down Test is a Much more reliable way of tellin' the general over all health of the motor,...

Feel your Doubt,

I bought a 3.0L in a Larson. Volvo Penta though. Same base engine.

The boat was SPOTLESS and the previous owner kept a log. I purchased at just over 15 hours, according to log. Judging by the condition of everything else, I believed. It was basically-NEW.

I think that was accurate as the engine seems to get looser/better the more I run it. Now at 37 hours.

I did get it serviced by a Qualified V-P dealer. He stated: "It's New".

I installed an hour meter and let it run, on a seperate battery, up to 15 hours. I have gone from there.

Do you need an hour meter-ABSOLUTELY. What else can you measure?

At least you'll know, from here on out, what your maintenance needs are.

Whether or not you will be able to determine the hours of the past you should install an hour meter going forward for knowing when to change oil etc. as stated above.

You did good. If the owner went through the trouble to keep records and keep the boat spotless I am sure he did the required maintenance. As far as hours, I would venture to say assume 25 a year. I say this because before I had kids I put 2000 hours on my first engine, then had kids and still boated a lot while they were little. They grow up, get into sports and activities and boating becomes less important. I actually have had 2 summers where the boat was never uncovered I am ashamed to admit. It's still difficult to get time. Enjoy your boat.
