I am looking to buy another boat vintage 2003-2005. Most boats of this vintage usually have 150-200 hours on them. I am looking at a 2003 boat with twin 5.0L MPI Mercruisers and almost 500 hours on each motor. I know a history of proper service and maintainance is a key factor, but how concerned should I be with a boat with so many hours? Do these hours suggest I will have to replace the risers and manifold sooner than a same boat with 200 hours? This boat is used in salt water. How many hours should I expect to get from a Mercruiser before major repairs will need to be made?

Re: engine hours

Thats not that many hours. Some boats have that in a year.
The manifolds will last 10-20 years. As long as the owner has kept up on the daily maint.Oil changes, drive oil changes. That is the key to any boat purchase.
The worst thing for a boat is not using it.Jerry

Re: engine hours

In salt water, manifolds and risers normally last between 6 and 10 years. Luck has to be with you over 8. Depending on the harbors you keep the boat in it may be as little as 4 or 5 years. Pulling the risers and inspecting them is the ONLY way to judge their life span, and DO NOT clean them out. If you do, the next step will be engine replacement.
500 hours (as noted) is not long. Industry works on an average of 100 hrs per year. Thus 100 hrs, or 1 year which ever comes first for things like oil changes, gear lube chenages, etc.

Seldom does a marine engine wear out. They go bad from lack of use and very poor maintenance, over propped and abuse.

Thanks. Approximately, what does it cost to replace risers and manifolds?

The price of Parts varies wildly, as to Who makes'em,+ who your buying from,.....
And,....
I take it you're Paying somebody to turn the wrenches,+ Not doing the labor Yourself,..??
