I am looking to buy another boat, vintage 2003-2005. Most boats of this vintage usually have 150-200 hours on them. I am looking at a 2003 boat with twin 5.0L MPI Mercruisers and almost 500 hours on each motor. I know a history of proper service and maintainance is a key factor, but how concerned should I be with a boat with so many hours? Do these hours suggest I will have to replace the risers and manifold sooner than a same boat with 200 hours? This boat is used in salt water. How many hours should I expect to get from a Mercruiser before major repairs will need to be made?

Re: engine hours

i would expect, that if they are all salt water boats, the exhaust service is coming soon. due to age.

Re: engine hours

Torcano,
all i've ever ran were Merc's,and all in salt water..so my experience is: Very well maintained, 1000hrs = rebuild,
and i do a complete SALTAWAY engine flush after each run, wash motors w/SA.
My risers & manifolds usually last 500-700 hrs.

It all depends on how the former owner treated her, keep in mind that if the port engine manifold fails..replace port & starboard, its rule of thumb, part goes in one motor...i replace both, cause, sure enough the other will fail soon after,
