Can anyone tell me how to go about identifying exactly what engine is in the boat that I own?

It is a 1968 17' Sabrecraft Riviera with an inline GM motor and an OMC stern drive.
The person that I purchased it from said that it was a 153 CI, but I am unsure of that.

The wiring setup that is on the boat lead me to believe it may be the 181 CI engine. But I need to know for sure.

There is no tag on the engine, the stamp that is on the head is GM 3905998, the distributor side of the block is stamped with m0820bw6x but I do not know where to look for information.

I have searched everywhere I can think of and have come up empty-handed.

Can anybody assist in this ID or at least let me know where I should be looking!
Thanks!

Re: Engine Identification

externally there is not a really good way for me to describe the difference in the 3.0 and the 2.5(153CID) motors. there is a slight difference along the pushrod cover side of the motor and some difference in the intake/exhaust ports in the head. if its the original motor its a 153 cid.
the GM marine catalog may help or contact GM marine. maybe a google search will help eith GM marine contact point.
other than a different water jacket, externally there is not much difference in the 153 and the 181 motors.
as the japs always ask when we have a question, why you need to know ?

Re: Engine Identification

I need to know because I am planning on doing a rebuild and want to make sure I get the correct parts, either that, or just do an engine swap.

Re: Engine Identification

The 181 has a dampener on the front of the crank. The 153 has only a pulley as the crank is balanced elsewhere.

On any i have seen at least.. in 1968 I was 3...
