Engine ignition won't engage after running

I have a 2001 Regal 2960 cruiser with twin 5.0 mercs. Recently, both engines start without issue at the dock. I run 15-30 minutes and tie up with friends. When time to leave, the right engine won't "start". I turn the key, the gauges register power, but the starter doesn't turn. It's similar to an experience when you try to start and the throttle not in neutral. I've tried "everything" I can think of - try in throttle neutral, giggle the throttle, parallel power from battery, etc. I do not have "kill switch" lanyards. I returned to the dock several days later, and they both start. Take it out and same issue. Luckily, I have two engines and not too far from dock! Would love some insight if anyone has seen this before.

Check the slave relay, its on the motor and feeds the starter solenoid from the key

Mmm. Are you sure you don’t have water draining into the cylinders and locking it up occasionaly? I’d be pulling the spark plugs out next time it happens to check for water. Just a thought.

I appreciate the input and suggestions.

Since I have no knowledge or experience with the slave relay, I assume you've seen it fail in this manner? Works at the dock, then doesn't after in use, then works a few days later? Does it "heat up" and fail?

As for water into cylinders, don't think that's an issue but I'll check. I can't connect the dots with spark plugs and turning the key and the starter doesn't engage.

I mentioned to check the relay. It could be the relay but could also be a bad connection to the relay. Relays normally fail and that's it, but some can have bad contacts inside.

When the key is turned to start it sends power from the key thru the neutral safety switch, then to the slave relay.

If it won't start (meaning no cranking) but the starter will crank if the top terminals of the relay are crossed. If this is the case then check connections from key to relay
