Hi everyone . I have a 88 merc alfa 1. I was told that the reason I had to replace my broken I/O was do to a bad control cable. OK, so I bought a new I/O , new bellows set is also being replace while I have it apart. My question is what control cable is making the interrupter switch not work correctly? Or is it the switch and/or plate? I don?t want my investment to go to Davy Jones. I understand I will need a special thin-walled socket as well, were can I get one of those? (as a disclaimer this is my first I/O, and did not understand that a faulty interrupter could trash the out drive, EXSPENSIVE LESSON)

a bad switch would make it very difficult to come OUT OF GEAR with the boat in the water.would have no bearing on ruining a drive

I thought that not killing the engine would put to much on the gears in lower half, possibly causing a gear pin to break or gear teeth. Either way I sent the lower back to SEI under the nofault 3 year warranty, do to no reverse. I had no reverse with it seperated from boat, on boat or seperated from upper half. I did have reverse when I installed and for the first year on the water no problems other than hard shifting (clunk clunk). Still question is do I need to replace the cable from shifter to plate, switch or ??? problem will still be switch not functioning, correct??? as I said noob to I/O. Any help in this woulbe great, if Im not asking the correct please correct me!!

Ayuh,... It's usually the cable from the switch to the drive, the Lower shift cable that causes Problems...
The switch will have to be tested with a multimeter or testlight...

the lower cable is part number 865436a02, craftsman makes a socket that will fit it, nothing special. or take one you have and grind it off a bit.
