So my dad has a 1978 Bayliner Saratoga that myself and my wife used last season. We had a good week long trip but we did run in to some engine issues. I would like to get it running properly in order to sell it to a buddy.

The Engine is:

1978 230hp Mercruiser (Ford) 351

Symptoms:
After about an hour of running the engine would start to sputter and spit then it will only run at about 1500rpm with WOT. It would also get more difficult to start once it got warm.
After many hours of trouble shooting we came to realize that it was an electrical issue. Upon further investigation, we noticed that the coil would overheat and not provide enough spark. We literally tried and tested every wire to diagnose why the coil was overheating, but to no avail. What it came down to was us having three different coils and when one would get hot, we would just swap it out for a cool one, needlees to say thats a PITA. Its a shame because when this old boat is running well, she really moves pretty good.

We even tried dropping and raising the resistance to the coil to see if that would help but it never did. Does anyone have any ideas as to whats going on here?

Actaually, I forgot to mention that we did swap out the points and condenser and it made no change. We also tried changing the spark plug wires, the ignition key switch and the entire fuse panel. We even tried a direct lead strait from the batteries to the coil and we still had the same results.

Thanks ENSIGN, we actaully did that as well with no change. This was just one of those little electrical gremlins that was just so elusive.

take the boat wiring out of the system for your test. Hot wire to battery with a ballast resistor
