engine knock or ping

hello everyone,

here's my problem and history
engine is a 2001 mercruiser 5.7 efi with a alpha one stern drive
394 hours on engine and stern drive both ran excellent with no problems
I have not did any maintenance on engine and stern drive
besides change oils annually and winterize.

problem - there is a loud ping or knock on right side of engine near top(sounds like it is coming from exhaust manifold) when you pass 1600 rpm. when I disengage stern drive and rev engine the motor sounds great at 1600-2500 rpm. no ping or knock. Took it in and mechanic is saying it could be a lifter or rocker.
not sure yet.

Can be a lifter, can also be a rod bearing!
I ve had a leaking exhaust to head gasket that sounded as a knock too.

Ayuh,.... And you're wondering Why you have Problems,..??..??..??..??..??
