Engine muff question

when I hook up my muffs to the engine where I am pretty sure the water intake is, I get nothing? When it is in the water it pumps water fine.

Ha Ha Dave! It is a 1970 9.5hp Johnson short shaft

I just guessing here but maybe it need the back pressure that it has while submerged?

I had a '73 9.5 and the muffs didn't fit too well and let a lot of the water spill. I had to hold them on tight to get a flow.

I have a 75 9.9 and the water intake is the verticle line of holes above the prop.<br /><br />I suspect that your impeller is close to being shot. It does not make a good enough seal inside the pump to suck the water unless the pump is submerged. Replace the pump & check again.
