Hi All-

I am hoping someone will be able to help me figure out what is going on with my boat. I have a 1987 merc 3.0 that cranks but will not start. It doesn't appear to be getting a spark. I have not used the boat in about 18 months. I put a new battery in but when I went to start it I was only getting a single click. I then put a new starter in and it turnovers but doesn't actually fire up. I pulled a spark plug out and it doesn't appear to be getting a spark. I have since replaced the coil and still won't start. I have checked all the battery connections and ground wires and they all look good.

I am not real engine savvy and I hoping someone can provide any suggestions of what else it could be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Being an 87 it can have DDIS or points ignition. Which one do you have?

Sounds good
Have you adjusted the points?

If this has been done then, check for spark by open and closing the points at the distributor. Get a spark gap tester or place a spark plug on the coil wire and connect to ground.
