Hi all getting conflicting information on engine oil.
Should I be using synthetic or mineral oil due to the fact it is an old engine

Doesn't matter at this point. Think of how many oil changes have happened during the engines life time and the many types of oil that was used. If you like, you can use high phosphate European formula oils since there is no catalytic converter on the boat engine. Just make sure you have 30W in the outdrive. Synthetic doesn't play well with the cone clutch and gear oil may very well cause the oil pump to shear off the shaft.

To keep it simple, I just use the same oil for both.

Not all service guys know that Volvo drives need a specific weight oil.
You might want to ask what kind and weight they're putting in???

While you have it out of the water, would be a good idea to perform the pressure and vacuum tests on the drive as well. Better to find out about any leaks sooner than later. If the boat is being left out of the water, that is a rather easy do-it-yourself maintenance item.
