I am looking for information on what are the best brands of oils to use in an older OMC 4.3L engine. Book calls out for 30W SF detergent. With some GM spec. that I can not find on any 30W oil.

Would Synthetic be a good idea or just a good 30W SH/SI HD?

I recently read in a boating mag. that synthetics are not recommended for marine engines. You need a straight weight not a multigrade.Marine engines are designed to run at higher rpm than a car so the need for a sae30 minimum is crucial.I run sae 40 and in hotter temps August,I run sae 50.The 50 is probably not necessary but better too thick than too thin. Plain 30W is what you want. You can get it at wallmart (I think I got Valvoline last time). Most larger auto parts stores will have it too (Pep Boys, etc.). Any auto place sould be happy to order you a case if they don't have it in stock...

Tom
