Engine/Outdrive weights?

Hi everybody, I've been lurking here for quite sometime. Most of my questions have been asked by other posters, so I had no need to post a question myself, until now.

I plan on building either a Hankinson Chunky Dory or a Glen-L V-Dory. I would like to power it with an I/O. The listed maximum engine and outdrive weight is 1000lbs.

I will be using the boat to fish Salmon and Tuna in the North Pacific out of Newport and Depoe Bay Oregon. I may even launch off the beach like the guys in Pacific City. I would like to use at least a 120horse, but I would like to go bigger if possible. I would hate to be caught with load of fish, ice and passengers on a following sea and be underpowered.

Is there someplace I can go to find the gross weights of various engine/outdrive combos??

Thanks in advance.

Re: Engine/Outdrive weights?

The Mercruiser website www.mercurymarine.com/sterndrives lists all the specs for their engines. As a guide, the smallest Mercruiser is the 3.0L (135 hp at the prop)with an Alpha One - Gen II outdrive. It weighs in at 634lbs. The next one up is the 4.3L (190 hp at the prop) with the same outdrive and it weighs 848lbs. You could go for something really nice like the 6.2 MPI (320 hp at the prop) with the Bravo outdrive, only 993lbs. You wouldn't have a problem with a boat load of people, fish, ice or anything with that engine. :D

Chris................

Re: Engine/Outdrive weights?

The older ones are very, very similar. The 3 litre goes back about 30 + years in one form or another. It was called the '140'. The V6 goes back to about 1985 and you'll see it called a 175hp (2bbl carb) or 205hp (4bbl carb). The weights are all very close to the new ones. If you're looking at a V8 then the '898', '200', '228', '230', 5.0L are all the Chev 305, and the '250', '260', 5.7L are all Chev 350's.

Plenty to choose from.

Chris.........
