Engine overheated

Hello everyone,
First time posting on this forum. Springs around the corner and I'm anticipating having to do some maintenance on our 2002 Larson 180sei, it has a 3.0 with a Volvo penta SX outdrive.
2011 labor day weekend the cooling system impeller went out and the engine overheated. Got the bot home and ordered the part and got it fixed. Took it to the river and backed it into the water and tested it. All good.
When I winterized the boat I noticed that nothing was coming out the prop exhaust outlet and everything was coming out where the outdrive pivots. So I'm looking at my service manual now and my thoughts are that the exhaust bellow was compromised when the engine overheated.
Any thoughts or pointers? Am I pointed in the right direction?
And how hard is it to remove the outdrive to get to the exhaust bellows if that is tuely the issue.
And as a result of overheating the coating on the exhaust has melted and sagged. What can I use to recoat it?

I guess you didn't take off the outdrive to lube the splines and align the engine which is part of the annual service you are supposed to do each year. Sounds like you probably did some damage to the bellows, it will be apparent once you get the leg off. As for the exhaust manifold which I guess is what you are referring to, I believe you can use engine paint on it, check with your local VP dealer for the correct colour and type. Did you drive the boat while it was overheating?? You may have caused other damage, keep an eye on the oil and for any abnormalities in the way the boat runs.

When you run the boats on the muffs, it is very normal for almost all the water to exit at the bottom of the drive housing. You are probably fine.

You would have cooked the rubber exhaust tube in the engine compartment before you damaged the exhaust bellows.

You should be pulling your drive annually, by the way, to check if water has entered the u-joint bellows, check for oil leaks, check u-joints, check gimbal bearing and engine alignment.

U-joint boots should be changed every 5 years if you haven't done so already.

Re: Engine overheated

Thanks guys
Thanks for the tips, if it isn't obvious already, yes I am a first time boat owner. Sounds like I'd better remove the outdrive this spring and check everything before the boating season starts.
The coating that I'm referring to is on the exhaust pipe not the exhaust manifold, I'm guessing it's rubber based.

I've checked everything out, I put her on the water and ran her up the river and took it easy and kept my eye on the temp gauge. She ran fine just as she did all summer. The only small thing that I noticed was the temp gauge would rise then drop quickly then rise and drop. After awhile this stabilized and I just chopped it up to needing a new thermostat due to the engine overheating.

How hard is it to pull the outdrive?

All depends on your mecahical skill. Its really not that hard of a task. Its basically diconnect the shift cable, disconnect the rams from the drive, remove the 6 nuts and pull it off. You will want to buy an alignment tool to check the engine alignment before you put the drive back on. Its 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off type of thing once you have done it a few times. Helps to make a drive stand but not necessary if you have a helper. They are heavy.

If you don't have a Volvo service manual yet, I suggest you buy one.

Re: Engine overheated

Thanks again
I do have the Volvo penta engines and drive systems manul. Found some pictures today of a guy that made a lift with a motorcycle jack. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not mechanically inept. I always like to know what I'm getting into before hand so I don't end up pulling a boat to the shop all torn apart.
